Barclays Cycle Hire Coming to Portsmouth & Southsea
The triumphant London city bike scheme nike named the ‘Boris Bike Scheme’ has been a great success in London and now Portsmouth & Southsea station along with Portsmouth University will be installing the bikes in an effort to ease conjestion and get a nation fitter.
How does it work? Take a cycle, ride it where you like, then return it, ready for the next person. Available 24 hours a day, all year round. It’s self-service and there’s no booking. Just turn up and go.
You can become a member online with Barclays to make the scheme more affordable but you can also just turn up at a bike stand and pay by card of over the telephone system to have a bike released for your use.
There is a ‘usage’ fee of either £1 for 24hrs, £5 for 7 days or annual member charge of £45. Then there is an additional charge for how long you use the bike during the term.
Upto 30 minutes is FREE so if your a quick rider you can get a bike for £1 between areas of Portsmouth & Southsea. If you prefer your rides a little less mental then maybe it’s an hour and a half for £4 or 2 hrs for £6. For the maximum use of 24 hrs it will cost you £45.
There is a minimum age of 14 years old due to insurance issues.
Offered at the hubs will be bike hire and repair services, secure cycle parking and lockers, maintenance facilities and advice on cycle training and safety.
The scheme is mainly aimed at encouraging commuters to use public transport and then finish their journeys by bicycle.
The scheme was made possible thanks to a successful bid for £5m of government cash from the Department for Transport’s £560m local sustainable transport fund.
