Aspex Gallery Portsmouth are seeking artists working in all media for their open submission exhibition, EMERGENCY. This is an international opportunity, seeking applications from anyone who considers themselves to be an emerging artist.

A maximum of ten artists will be selected for a group show, which will open in December 2017. During this exhibition, a winner will be chosen to receive a solo exhibition at Aspex in 2018, as well as a fee of £1,000.

The selectors are Aspex director Joanne Bushnell, IMT Gallery director Lindsay Friend, Transition Gallery artist and director Cathy Lomax, and Grizedale Arts director Adam Sutherland.

EMERGENCY was established in 2003, and each edition has provided an opportunity for the winner to realize a solo exhibition at Aspex Gallery. Previous winners include Susan Collins in 2003, Tim Machin in 2005, Cathy Ward and Eric Wright in 2007, Kihlberg and Henry in 2009, Charlie Tweed in 2011, Jim Howieson in 2013, and Maya Ramsay in 2015.

Artist David Blandy, who has now exhibited extensively worldwide, said: “I first showed at Aspex in EMERGENCY, their open exhibition in 2003/4, alongside Juneau Projects and Susan Collis among others, and it was great to see my work in the context of their work.

“It gave me the confidence to keep pushing my practice, to keep trying to make a life as an artist, at a time when I was fresh out of art school and was still a few years away from my first solo show.

“This is a critical stage in any artist’s career, a stage where being involved in a show like EMERGENCY at an important gallery like Aspex can persuade you it’s worth persevering.”

Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex, said: “EMERGENCY is a real highlight for Aspex, a chance to provide an excellent snapshot of emerging practice today. The selectors and I are looking forward to seeing a diverse and exciting range of work from those that submit to this opportunity.”

The deadline for EMERGENCY submissions is Sunday 13th August 2017. For more information, visit aspex.org.uk.
