Event highlights in Portsmouth and Southsea this June
Look at that sun! We’re almost halfway through 2017 — wasn’t it Christmas just last week? — and Portsmouth’s events calendar is getting as hot as the weather.
Southsea Bandstand is underway every weekend, Portsmouth Festivities is just around the corner, festival season has kicked off, and venues across the city have some big names hitting their stages.

Whitney: Queen of the Night at the Kings Theatre
Join Portsmouth’s Kings Theatre on Friday 2nd June for Queen of the Night, celebrating the music of legendary musician Whitney Houston.
The show will take you on a magical rollercoaster ride through three decades of classic hits, including, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, One Moment In Time, I’m Every Woman, Saving All My Love, and so much more.
Love Southsea Market on Palmerston Road
An eclectic mix of traders will be setting up stalls at the Love Southsea Market in Palmerston Road on the first weekend of June — from makers, artists, illustrators, and vintage clothes traders to jewelry makers, shabby chic sellers, and giftware stalls.
Champagne Sundays at the Spinnaker Tower
Raise a toast to the incredible views this summer at the Spinnaker Tower’s brand new pop-up Champagne Bar event, with the first of many taking place on Sunday 11th June.
Savour the stunning sunset over Portsmouth Harbour and be serenaded by live music whilst enjoying Champagne on View Deck 1, 100 metres above sea level.
From Friday 16th June to Sunday 25th June 2017, Portsmouth Festivities returns, capturing imaginations, celebrating diversity, and exploring Portsmouth’s amazing heritage.
Idina Menzel at Portsmouth Guildhall
Head to Portsmouth Guildhall to see legendary singer and musician Idina Menzel perform live on Friday 16th June.
After releasing her fifth solo studio album idina. last autumn, the Tony Award-winning superstar announced that she will return to the UK as part of her 50+ city global spring & summer tour.
Live at the Bandstand: Uni Big Band and The Three Belles
Nick Courtney hosts Live at the Bandstand on Southsea seafront on Sunday 4th June, featuring the University of Portsmouth Big Band and The Three Belles.
The University of Portsmouth Big Band play a wide range of music — anything from jazz standards and soul to funk, Latin, cheese, and just about everything in between. When in full swing, this 18-piece big band showcases the talent of its saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and rhythm sections, while also calling on the excellent vocal talents of our singers.
The Three Belles are a vocal trio inspired by the Andrew’s Sisters. They rekindle the nation’s love of jazz music and capture an era which is timeless, producing work of a professional standard to perform at events or venues for audiences young and old.
Sam Bailey: Sing My Heart Out at The Kings Theatre
English singer-songwriter Sam Bailey, renowned for winning the tenth series of The X Factor in 2013, brings her uplifting, poppy, and soulful sound to The Kings Theatre on Friday 16th June.
Her latest release, Sing My Heart Out, showcases Sam’s powerhouse vocals, setting a positive, inspiring message against an epic melody.
Tron at No. 6 Cinema’s Incredible Moving Picturehouse
№6 Cinema, Portsmouth’s only independent filmhouse, are partnering with Portsmouth Festivities to bring The Incredible Moving Picturehouse to Southsea Common for a screening of 1982 science-fiction classic Tron on Saturday 17th June.
Portsmouth Seafood Festival at Gunwharf Quays
Seafood lovers are in for a real treat this summer, as Gunwharf Quays play host to Portsmouth’s very first Seafood Festival, celebrating the city’s seafood and fishing heritage.
The free two-day event will take place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June from 10:00am to 6:00pm. The weekend will showcase the Solent’s finest cuisine, giving visitors the chance to see local seafood chefs in action, and an opportunity to taste regional produce.
Edinburgh Previews at Portsmouth Guildhall
Can’t make it to Edinburgh Fringe this year? No problem! Stand-up comedians Sara Pascoe and Tom Houghton will be bringing their Edinburgh preview shows down to Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday 17th June.
The Cureheads at The Wedgewood Rooms
The Cureheads are the world’s best-renowned tribute to The Cure, having played to over half-a-million Cure fans all over the globe since 1990, and are coming to The Wedgewood Rooms on Saturday 24th June.
Isle of Wight Festival 2017
Join Headliners David Guetta, Run DMC, Arcade Fire, and Rod Stewart for the Isle of Wight Festival from Thursday 8th June to Sunday 11th June.
Taking place across Seaclose Park in Newport, other performers include Kaiser Chiefs, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Bastille, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man, George Ezra, The Pretenders, Zara Larsson, Clean Bandit, The Kooks, The Vamps, and The Amazons.
