Omega Arts Centre Portsmouth
Omega Arts Centre is an exciting new programme of workshops, short courses and arts-focused activities. Run by a team of highly-skilled professional artist-tutors means that they are able to cover a wide range of arts and crafts.
Courses take place at Omega Arts Centre in Southsea, Portsmouth: a modern adult learning centre based in a grand Victorian school with an extensive range of traditional and modern arts facilities, including printing presses, a pottery studio, kilns, and amazing art rooms with high ceilings and beautiful windows providing an abundance of natural light.
Built in 1881, this beautifully light and airy Victorian building has been a place of learning for more than 130 years – first as a board school, then as a primary school, and more recently as a base for Portsmouth University’s Restoration and Decorative Studies and Foundation and Interior Design courses, as well as artists’ studios. In 2008, the WEA took on the running of the building and restored it in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, and it has since become the thriving learning centre it is today.
A handful of pilot workshops we run last year, including a Christmas craft-themed event. Check out the promo video below for more information.
The Omega Centre is located in Somerstown, and has been a part of Portsmouth’s arts and education landscape for many years, obtaining a well-deserved reputation for involving local people of all backgrounds.
The WEA, which has more than 100 years of experience in bringing educational opportunities to adults, took over the management of the building in 2008, and led its refurbishment with support from Portsmouth City Council. It’s now regarded as the city’s leader for adult education in the fields of arts, media, IT, and skills for life — literacy and numeracy, for example.
