South Downs College in Waterlooville is a further education college just north of Portsmouth atop Portsdown Hill, declared ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, and offering a vast range of A-Level and vocational courses, both full-time and part-time, alongside apprenticeship, traineeship, and internship schemes.

The premises boasts continually-improving teaching areas, theatrical and performance spaces, a modern training salon in the Hair & Beauty department, a fitness centre containing state-of-the-art equipment, a purpose-built music building with recital rooms, practice rooms, and a recording studio, a fully-licensed restaurant, science labs, media studios, networked IT facilities, a specially-designed animal building for handling and care courses, and a commercial airplane simulator for cabin crew and air services courses.

In 2013, A-Levels saw a 99.7% pass rate, with the majority of vocational courses reaching a 100% pass rate.

Recently, the college started investing a much larger amount of resources, money, and time into their apprenticeship scheme, in light of the rapidly increasing popularity of the less-traditional approach to further education, as both students and employers alike begin realising the mass benefits of such schemes.

South Downs delivers high-quality professional training using trainers who have had many years in the industry, working with students and their employers to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to do well and achieve success at the business which has taken the apprentice on.

The benefits to employers include developing a well-trained and motivated workforce with support from South Downs, one of the UK’s Beacon Colleges, with assessors and verifiers working closely with the industry to achieve high levels of success in the workplace — a commitment that will certainly be reflected in apprenticeship and training programmes.
