Southsea Pier, LETS BUY IT!

by

They wont let you walk down it so why not buy a piece of it…….

East Southsea and Eastney Neighbourhood forums will be joining forces this week for the 1st joint public meeting to discuss plans to save Southsea Pier.

The meeting will take place at The Royal Beach Hotel, Southsea on Thursday 14th June with a 6.30pm start.

Please note that the meeting will start on the promenade next to the pier to discuss sea defences before moving into the hotel ‘Invincible Suite’.

The aim of the meeting is to gather as much interest and awareness as possible and look at the options for the future of this iconic southern landmark and how we can all help to save it.

As reported recently Local company Southsea Captital LTD are currently investing around £50,000 into the pier to renovate some essential areas of the building but also to build a brand new fish & chip cafe for all to enjoy.

Locals, families and tourists have been banned from walking to the far end of the pier with the current owners placing the blame firmly on the local council. Despite this move the owners are still allowing paying fishing visitors to fish of the end of the pier.

So come along, have your say on this amazing landmark and see what you can do to make a difference. You never know you may shorty own a piece of history with a share in Southsea’s Pier.

The forum will also be discussing other historic landmarks along our coast including the Edwardian Shelter at the Eastney end of Southsea seafront.

I’m intrigued & fascinated by the pier & by these ideas. I ran a club night on the pier for 17 years until 2008 (chaos) and saw many different owners, managers and problems with the interior & the exterior. It is iconic, but my god it’s a money pit too. The building, the staff & the structure won’t survive on its iconic status – it needs solid investment and above all, a solid regular way of generating income 52 weeks a year, not relying on the fluctuations of the British summer & fickle tourist market. Sorry to sound negative, but having been an active participant in the place I feel I’m allowed to be realistic. Private ownership ‘could’ work, but simply rattling a bucket won’t offer the long term stability & progression the place needs.

I can’t agree more – it’s vitally important that our pier is not only protected, but utilised and enjoyed. I grew up in Hastings, and lived in Brighton, both of which have piers that were allowed to become derelict and eventually burned down. This is the sad but but inevitable fate that awaits our pier if swift decisions aren’t taken. Piers that are empty and unused (even in part) seem to attract vandals, and once they start to fall into disrepair they become too expensive to maintain and it’s a downward spiral. Please don’t let’s allow our pier go the way of Hastings and Brighton – once it’s gone it’s gone forever!

Thanks for your support.  Please come to the meeting at 7pm in the Royal Beach Hotel opposite South Parade Pier on Thursday this week, June 14.
Do you have any fundraising, financial, business, marketing, communication or other skills that could be of use to us? If so, please let me know – we need all the help we can get.If not, you can still help by telling all your friends and family to rally round, and to rally their own circles of friends and family.Best wishes.

Thanks Charley! You have done a massive piece of good community work with that post.
I believe we must now quickly get ready for an inevitable crisis at South Parade Pier. If the community doesn’t prepare to do something, we are in my opinion already kissing our much-loved pier goodbye for ever. Saving it is likely to be a very uphill, blood-sweat-and-tears project and we need every helper we can get as soon as possible. You also mention our campaign to relocate a big, beautiful Edwardian Shelter at the unprotected Eastney end of the seafront. This is a much smallerproject — we have a target of £100,000 in cash and kind to raise the £65,000 we need to re-use this lovely piece of street furniture where families walking the prom need it most. But this project too is desperately short of volunteers who can help us campaign and raise money. Fund-raisers, digital marketeers expert in social media, and someone qualified to be our treasurer (a pro bono chartered accountant?), are desperately needed — not to mention donations.Your readers can read all about it — and how to donate — through http://www.SouthseaShelter.co.uk or email us about both the pier and the shelter at Southsea.Forum@gmail.com

Southsea Pier, has always been an icon & always will be, even B4 film crew of ‘Tommy’ burnt it down.:(

It may not “always will be”. It needs investment and a lot of work to save it. Otherwise it not a case of maybe, but when, we don’t have a pier any more. We need volunteers to help the community buy the pier we all love..
