For February events in Portsmouth we have some live music performances, Valentine’s Day treats, charity and theatre events plus even more movie screenings! Here’s a list of the top nine events for you and your family to enjoy during February and over the half- term.

1) Winter Wildlife Day at Portsmouth Watersports Centre (fun for all the family)
Portsmouth Watersports Centre, located along Eastern Road, have a packed year of events planned for 2016. To kick of a busy schedule, and back by popular demand, the centre present their Winter Wildlife Day.
On the day they’ll be fun for all the family, with an array of things to see and do with activities including kayak trip to see the Langstone Harbour seals (small charge and book on the day ), beach safari exploration, pond dipping, seed planting, make your own bird cake for the garden, climbing wall, high ropes and leap of faith.
Exhibitors on the day will include: Slip, Slither and Slide (snakes, spiders, amphibians), Highbury College, New Forest Wildlife Park, Hampshire Barn Owl Project, RSPB, Hampshire and IOW Wildlife Trust, Cumberland House Southsea, Portsmouth Beekeepers, Friends of Langstone Harbour, Marine Conservation Society, Bert’s Hedgehogs, Langstone Harbour, Hayling Island Donkeys (weather permitting).
Free parking, food and refresments available on the day.
2) Star Wars: The Force Awakens at No. 6 Cinema
No. 6 Cinema, Portsmouth’s only independent filmhouse, will be screening 2015 American epic space opera film Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Saturday 6th February 2016, from 7:00pm.
Set three decades after Return Of The Jedi, the much-anticipated new Star Wars episode sees the return of the iconic franchise’s original stars, as well as new characters and lightsaber-wielding villains.
There are stunning special effects, an emotional storyline, dramatic action, and dashes of humour in this heroic return of cinema’s most enduring epics.

Starring: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver.
Running time: two hours and 15 minutes (135 minutes).

3) Gabrielle Aplin at The Pyramids Centre
English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin performs at The Pyramids Centre on Southsea seafront on Tuesday 11th February, with support from Hudson Taylor and Hannah Grace.
The date forms part of Aplin’s UK and Ireland tour, which follows positive reception and critical acclaim of her chart-topping album Light Up The Dark.
The record, which was released in September 2015, marks a new chapter in a career which has already delivered huge success. Aplin’s recent show at London’s Wilton’s Music Hall sold out in less than 24 hours, and Light Up The Dark has received extensive coverage on BBC Radio 1, with DJ Huw Stephens selecting the title track as one of his Hottest Records.
The singer-songwriter said: “I’ve also become much more comfortable writing songs about other people’s stories as well as my own, much of which is inspired by travelling and everything I’ve seen since my first album.”
GQ Magazine called her “an acoustic queen for the digital age,” whilst Mojo said she “pens languid, soulful contemplation.” Glamour describes her sound as “effortlessly switching from sultry, hypnotic sounds to more upbeat jazz melodies.”

4) Hozier at the Guildhall Portsmouth
Hozier, whose Global star continues to soar following 2 Billboard Awards, a coveted Ivor Novello, stunning sets at Glastonbury, Longitude and Redrocks, among other summer festival highlights, has announced his one and only UK tour for 2016.
With his critically acclaimed debut album soon to hit double Platinum status in the UK, the 25 year old Wicklow native, who has been touring and winning fans across the world for the last 2 years, will play these shows before taking time out to begin work on his new album.
5) The return of Love Southsea Market in Palmerston Road
The Love Southsea Market returns to Palmerston Road this February, from 9:00am through to 5:00pm on Saturday 6th February and 10:00am through 4:00pm on Sunday 6th February 2016.
An eclectic spectrum of traders will be setting up stalls — from makers, artists, illustrators, and vintage clothes traders to jewellery makers, shabby chic sellers, and giftware stalls.
And, ideal for lunchtime, Love Southsea’s markets always offer a diverse selection of street food traders.
The Palmerston Road market is completely free to enter.
6) Startup Portsmouth Summit 2016
Local business initiative Startup Portsmouth host their annual community event on Saturday 6th February 2016, a free summit for budding business owners with networking opportunities, seminars, and round-table discussions.
The drop-in event takes place at the University of Portsmouth’s Richmond Building, in Portland Street, from 12:00pm noon through 2:30pm.

7) Egg and Spoon
UK-based children’s theatre company, Lyngo presents its first special theatre show for the early years at the New Theatre Royal from 1:30pm on Sunday 14th February.
Egg and Spoon is an interactive romp through the seasons where participants jump in and out of a magic circle and get to open all the gifts of nature.
Percy and April get you settled on our comfortable cushions and introduce you to Birdy, still hiding in his glowing egg. Visitors will run through the rain and the falling leaves and sleep under the snow ’til the sun wakes us up for the butterfly party.
Egg and Spoon is a perfect gentle introduction to the magic of theatre for children aged 1 – 5.

8) Tosca at the Kings Theatre
This traditional production is a heady mixture of true love, torture, and treachery, with two of the best roles for tenor and soprano, plus a truly blood-curdling villain.
Set against the beautiful backdrop of Rome, with spectacular costumes, and featuring a boys’ choir, this most popular of operas is sure to delight with its tender, moving arias Vissi d’arte and E Lucevan le Stelle.

9) Tangled Up! Trance Festival at The Old Barn
The Old Barn in Milton Park goes trance on Saturday 20th February with the Tangled Up! festival, running from 2:00pm through to 1:30am.
Headliners include Dan Thompson (Armada/Cold Harbour), Josh Bailey (Statement), and Tristan C (Trance Sanctuary), with support from Barn residents Mike Merrett and Sam Brown.
The roof will be raised by two rooms of house, progressive house, techno, and trance, as the party runs through to the early hours.

10) The Assassin at No. 6 Cinema
In 9th-century China, Nie Yinniang (Qi Shu) is trained by an imperious nun to become a ruthless killer of corrupt officials.
Revered Taiwanese auteur Hsiao-Hsien Hou won the best director award at Cannes for this elegant account of Nie Yinniang’s mission to murder Lord Tian Ji’an, her ex-lover.
The fight sequences are marvellously fast and furious, but the emphasis is more on the cerebral conflicts in what is a beautiful piece of filmmaking on every level.

Running time: one hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes).

11) A Night of Bowie at The Wedgewood Rooms
The night’s line-up features members of sixties band Mojo Dollar, neo-soul group Tremain, alternative indie band Veludo Planes, Fleetwood Mac tribute Fleetingwood Mac, and heavy rock band The Underground Pilots — a terrific selection of local talent.
Also performing on the night are Andrew Foster, Gareth Howells, Ella Payne, Ben Brooks, Dave Barrett, Mark Thompson-Smith, Paul Dillion, and Aviv.
