University of Portsmouth Launching West Wing Extension of Eldon Building
The University of Portsmouth is launching its brand new Eldon West Wing at a press event on Friday 30th May.
University Chancellor Sandi Toksvig will officially open the new wing and unveil a plaque commemorating its conception. She will be joined by her old friend and predecessor as Chancellor, the actress Sheila Hancock.
Other guests to the event will include the University’s former Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Craven, as well as faculty staff and students who will be launching their end-of-term summer show.
The proceedings will kick off with a fashion show by students from the BA (hons) Fashion and Textiles Degree, while exhibitions of art, photography, graphic design, and a range of other exhibits will be on display in the building, and will be on show until June 6th.
Following the main ceremony, there will be music in the courtyard presented by local samba band Batala Portsmouth, who will be playing authentic Afro-Brazilian reggae music, followed by a performance from the 1940s-inspired crooning trios The Three Belles and The Bevin Boys.
The launch event will be filmed by over 60 of the University’s television and broadcasting students and staff as part of a marathon 24-hour broadcast which will make Portsmouth’s the first University in the UK to broadcast a 24-hour livestream of original programming and content.
The building is a £14million investment by the University, and forms a part of the long-term strategic plan to foster arts and creativity in the region. The Eldon Building houses state-of-the-art facilities including a 200-seat cinema-quality screening room which doubles as a lecture theatre, as well as other facilities such as an exhibition space, seven large seminar rooms, an art shop, and a purpose-built fashion, textiles, architecture, and interior design studio.
This event will take place from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday 30th May at the Eldon Building on Winston Churchill Avenue.
