No. 6 Cinema, Portsmouth’s only independent filmhouse, will be screening 2014 British biographical romantic drama ‘Theory of Everything’ on Friday 13th February from 7:00pm, and the classic romantic movie ‘Casablanca’ on Valentine’s Day itself.
Both movies have romance and love at their hearts — Casablanca has been known as a romance classic for decades, whilst The Theory of Everything has received nothing but praise and critical acclaim for the oft-tragic love story at its centre since its premiere last year.
The Theory of Everything brings the story of Stephen Hawking, a brilliant scientist whose groundbreaking ideas came into popular consciousness with the bestselling A Brief History of Time, to the big screen. It’s the dignified way he has lived with motor neurone disease that has helped to make him so widely admired by the public.
Starting with his years as a postgraduate student in 1960s Cambridge, the film portrays his blossoming romance with Jane Wilde (played by Felicity Jones) who, as his disease progresses, he tries to reject in the hope of sparing her pain. Eddie Redmayne is Oscar-tipped for his stunning performance as Stephen in this profound and moving film.
Book tickets for the screening of The Theory of Everything through the No. 6 Cinema website here, or buy on the door on the night.
In Casablanca, Rick Blaine (Bogart) is a cynical but good-hearted American whose café is the gathering place for everyone from the French police to the black market to the Nazis. When his long-lost love, Ilsa (Bergman), appears with her Resistance leader husband, Victor (Henreid), Rick is pulled into a love triangle and a web of political intrigue. They need to escape from their Moroccan city of Casablanca, and Rick may be the only one who can help them. Beautifully restored, ‘Casablanca’ has lost none of its excitement, drama, and romantic charm.

Once, twice, three times a lady. The St Valentine’s Day Massacre is back, murdering classic in the name of love!
The premise is simple: a collection of local acts serenade you with their renditions of popular love songs. There are seven bands in total with 15 minutes of stage time each. The window to impress is small so they will make every guitar solo, every falsetto, every key change count in the hope of taking the audience’s breath away.
The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre returns to The Edge of the Wedge with a small entry fee of £3.00. All proceeds go to the National Foundation of Youth Music. These donations will give under-privileged children access to musical education and equipment which in turn will help develop their creative and social skills.
2015’s line-up features Anansi Boys, Battery Hens, Crucial Taunt (AKA Noyo Mathis), Jesse Wyldes & The Stallions, Kelly Kemp & El Morgan, Red Seals, and some very special guests (a one-night-only supergroup).
There’ll also be a raffle on the night, with prizes from Feed, 6oz Burgers, No. 6 Cinema, Pie & Vinyl, Southsea Coffee Co., The Wave Maiden, The Wedgewood Rooms, The Music Room, Holga Rama, and The King Street Tavern.
Hearts will mend, ears will break. Whether you’re renewing your vows or on your first date, the organisers have promised a night to remember. If you know the words, sing along with the struggling vocalists and remember it’s all in aid of a good cause.
Doors open at 7:30pm and the first act will commence the evening’s entertainment from 8:00pm.
The event takes place on Thursday 12th February.

Lord Mayor Councillor Steven Wylie said: “I have chosen four local charities for which i’ll be raising money this year, and they’re all Portsmouth-based. The first is The Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity, the Salvation Army Haven Centre is my next charity, which will be celebrating 20 years this year. Thirdly, I will be supporting the Play Centres and Youth Clubs of Portsmouth. My last charity like all the rest is at the heart of the city which is Pompey in the Community.
“I have chosen the charities for specific purposes for the benefit of the people of Portsmouth. The money raised will support family projects which bring our service families closer together. It will help the Community Centre services, to enable digital inclusion for older people and children to enhance their learning experience. A youth project as they can offer residential and offsite positive leisure possibilities in the countryside. Finally, the motivational power of Portsmouth Football Club.”
