Valentine’s Day 2017 events and highlights in Portsmouth
Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is here to stay as the annual celebration of love, romance, and awkward dates!
With it comes countless Valentine’s-themed events, from special menus at your favourite restaurants and screenings of romantic movies in the local cinema to cheesy cheery theatre shows and nights out for the single-and-seeking — or single-and-satisfied!

Valentine’s Dinner and Dance at Portsmouth Guildhall
Join Portsmouth Guildhall on Friday 17th February for a two-course Valentine’s meal and live entertainment from Michael Bublé tribute act, crooner Tony Tyler.
Enter through the majestic bronze doors at the top of the renowned Guildhall steps, enjoy a glass of pink Prosecco, and indulge in a banquet-style two-course dinner, before dancing the night away with your loved one or friends to the sounds of Bublé.
Dishes on offer include parmesan-crumbed chicken breast with dauphinoise potatoes, roasted butternut, and beetroot with a creamy white wine sauce, or goat’s cheese Wellington slice with dauphinoise potatoes, roasted butternut, and beetroot with a creamy white wine sauce.
The dessert consists of a Belgian chocolate salted caramel mousse dome with chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Dirty Dancing Valentine’s Night Special at No. 6 Cinema
No. 6 Cinema, Portsmouth’s only independent filmhouse, screen 1987 American romantic dance drama film Dirty Dancing on Saturday 11th February 2017, from 7:00pm, and are teaming up with Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl to serve up delectable pies especially for Valentine’s Day — vegetarian option included!
College-bound ‘Baby’, on holiday with her parents at a Borscht-Belt hotel, meets the resort’s resident dancer and ends up taking his injured partner’s place in a show. This involves being coached to professional standard in just a few days, leading to some movingly coy scenes as the two fall in love and into bed.
Tickets are £8.00 with £6.50 concessions for just the screening of Dirty Dancing, or £14.00 with £12.50 concessions for the screening and a pie.
Valentine’s Day Comedy Club at the Spinnaker Tower
The Spinnaker Tower Comedy club returns on Saturday 11th February and Sunday 12th February for two Valentine’s season specials.
Joe Lycett takes the headlining spot, hot on the heels of the launch of a best-selling book and the unveiling of his own TV show! Over the last year alone, Lycett has become a regular on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, appeared on Live At The Apollo, starred in Mock The Week, and had a sell out UK tour.
In support is Alex Smith, the guitar-wielding funnyman who Russell Kane chose to support him on his last theatre tour, and Michael Fabbri, one of the most respected and funniest comedians on the UK circuit, and a regular at London’s Comedy Store.
Both nights will be held together by award-winning compère James Alderson, who has thrown two of these Valentine’s nights this year, because of the high annual demand!
The comedy shows themselves are £15.00 per head, but you can also get a trip up the tower, a red rose, a glass of bubbly, and a meal for £32.50 each.
Playdate with Dice Portsmouth
Join Dice Portsmouth for a Valentine’s-inspired night of board gaming fun at Action Stations on Saturday 11th February.
Whether you’re single, a couple, or even a group (if you’re into that sort of thing!), come along and enjoy Dice’s huge library of board games from 7:00pm to 11:00pm.
There’ll be a Love Letter tournament with prizes, all-night access to the lazer quest arena and Ninja Force! assault course, and alcohol and snacks.

Valentine’s Truffle Workshop
Local chocolatiers Choc & Truffle host a fun hands-on Valentine’s-themed workshop offering an introduction to chocolate tempering through two different methods that you can try at home, using the highest-quality Belgian chocolate.
You will make an indulgent fresh cream chocolate ganache with a flavour of your choice, piping into chocolate spheres ready to dip in decadent liquid chocolate and lovingly decorated with a variety of transfer sheets, shimmers, and sprinkles.
Then, it’ll be time to strike a pose, making your own edible photobooth prop — choose between ruby red lips or a tickly moustache! You’ll package everything up beautifully, ready to give to someone special.
Fifty Shades Darker Cinema and Meal Deal at Grosvenor Casino
Grosvenor Casino in Gunwharf Quays are spicing things up with screenings of 2017 American erotic romantic drama film Fifty Shades Darker, daily from Sunday 12th through Tuesday 14th February.
When a wounded Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) tries to entice a cautious Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) back into his life, she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance. As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle them, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.
Included in the night is a two-course meal and a glass of bubbly in the casino, before guests are guided around to Vue Cinema to see the film. Each night starts from 6:30pm, and is £17.50 per person.

Dreamboats and Petticoats at The Kings Theatre
Throughout February, iconic jukebox musical Dreamboats and Petticoats hits the stage at Portsmouth’s Kings Theatre, including a performance on Saturday 11th February at 7:30pm — ideal for a Valentine’s season date.

The minds behind Portsmouth’s Day of the Dead return with an evening of stories and songs. Choose beer. Choose cheese. Choose rage.
Valentine’s Day Massacre takes place at The Wave Maiden in Osborne Road on Tuesday 14th February from 6:30pm.

Love Bites at the Spinnaker Tower
Love is in the air at the Spinnaker Tower on Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th, and Tuesday 14th February — Valentine’s Day — with three romantic evenings 105 metres up in the intimate surroundings of the Café in the Clouds.
Couples will be treated to a selection of sweet and savoury bites and a mini bottle of Prosecco while enjoying the stunning, romantic, panoramic floor-to-ceiling views from the deck.
The Love Bites evenings will take place from 8:00pm to 11:00pm on each day, and tickets are £70.00 per couple.
