Aspex seeks artist with disability for residency
Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays are taking applications for an artist-in-residence with a disability, as part of their EVOLVE pilot project.
Funding of £1,000 is available to support an emerging artist in developing new work for presentation at offsite events, and use of Aspex’s new artist studio is available for the duration of the residency.
The residency takes place from 1st August through 26th August 2016, with the final presentation of the work at offsite locations from 27th August through 18th September.
EVOLVE is a disability arts consortium partnership between the New Theatre Royal, Aspex Gallery, and Portsmouth Guildhall.
The project addresses a lack of arts and cultural provision for children, young people, and adults with physical and learning disabilities in Portsmouth and surrounding areas.
EVOLVE aims to give people of all ages the opportunity to interact with high-quality artwork, engaging with a range of art forms including visual arts, performance, and music.
Vicky Chapter, Participation & Learning Manager at Aspex, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for an artist to work with the gallery at a significant time in its 35th anniversary year, and following the recent capital investment by Arts Council England, Foyle Foundation, and Garfield Weston Foundation in 2016 to develop a new artist studio and expanded Learning Space.”
Applications should be sent in writing (a concise cover letter, CV, and project proposal of a maximum of one sheet of A4), or as an audio or video file outlining your experience, your interest in the residency, and the work you would like to develop. These files should be emailed to vicky@aspex.org.uk no later than midday on Tuesday 7th June 2016.
Interviews with shortlisted candidates will take place via Skype or in person on Thursday 9th June 2016, and unsuccessful applicants will be notified after this date.
