Mayville High School Southsea have expressed their excitement at 95% of their pupils achieving five A* to C grades, including maths and English — 15% up on last year.

Headteacher Rebecca Parkyn said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results which show what persistent hard work and excellent teaching can achieve. The secret of our success lies in the sheer scale of support we give to each pupil.

“Our teachers show incredible commitment and skill and work extremely hard to bring about the best possible outcome for every pupil.

“Congratulations to all pupils who leave Mayville for college after such well-deserved success.

This success comes despite a series of changes in exams and gradings, including a new nine-point scale in the key subjects of English and maths.

A group of Mayville pupils scored the top grade of 9 in maths and English, despite the fact that nationally, only 3.5% of students received a 9 in maths, 3.2% in English literature, and 2.2% in English language, under the new numerical grading system introduced for those subjects.

Only pupils scoring 96% or above in exams achieved this result.
