Uber taxis commence operation in Portsmouth from 4:00pm today
App-based taxi service Uber will officially launch in Portsmouth this afternoon (Friday 13th November).
The app, originally founded in 2009 as ‘UberCab’ by entrepreneurs Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, will be available for smartphone users around the city from 4:00pm.
The San Francisco business operates across 65 countries worldwide, and in 11 UK cities, with Portsmouth becoming the first city in the south of England to benefit from the service.
A spokesperson for Uber said: “Portsmouth — home to the Spinnaker Tower, 800 years of maritime history, and Charles Dickens himself. As of today, we’re very proud to be the latest kids on the block calling Pompey home.
“From 4:00pm today, you’ll be able to request a car at the touch of a button in our first south coast city. So, whether you’re planning a night out at Southsea, heading for a spot of retail therapy at Gunwharf Quays, or catching the match at Fratton Park, you’ll never be more than a tap away from a safe and reliable ride!
“The first 200 riders will also find a special welcome surprise waiting for them in their car. We’re working hard at getting more cars onto the road as the weeks progress, so if you can’t get a car first time round, keep trying.”
If you’re new to the Uber service you can get £15 off your first ride with the code PORTSMOUTH15.
