Young people celebrate four decades of punk in Portsmouth
Intergenerational youth-driven Heritage Lottery-funded project Provincial Punk in Pompey, run by the Portsmouth Cultural Trust, culminates in a much-anticipated live gig at Portsmouth Guildhall on Thursday 17th November.
The project has explored, documented, and celebrated 40 years of Portsmouth’s musical heritage, and the influence the punk scene has had on the city and its people. It features testimonies from local people who experienced the punk movement firehand.
Thursday’s live event features a newly-formed punk band, a young punk band, and local band Kojak’s Revenge playing punk covers, supported by punk and reggae DJs playing traditional vinyl between sets.
Anyone who comes along will get to watch the half-hour documentary film, attend an exhibition that’s been created by the young people, and purchase bespokes merchandise made during the project.
Hayley Reay, Portsmouth Cultural Trust’s Learning & Participation Manager, said: “The fantastic outcomes achieved from this project wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from local people who have dedicated their time, guidance, and knowledge to make the project what it is.”
Portsmouth Libraries and Archive services, heritage partner for the project, supported participants with their research and provided training in archiving materials, which will be stored in the libraries after the project’s completion for people to freely access.
Doors for the live event in Portsmouth Guildhall’s main auditorium open at 7:30pm. Tickets are £7.00 and include a project magazine. All proceeds will go to the Portsmouth Cultural Trust charity.
