Hack Pompey 2018

Hack Pompey 2018

On the weekend beginning November 3rd, people from all backgrounds and disciplines join together to learn something new, work together, and build something awesome at the South Coast’s biggest hackathon; Hack Pompey.

Hack Pompey began in 2014 as a social hack day at Portsmouth University’s Innovation Space. Conceived by two School of Computing undergrads (Zac Colley and Peter Jones), it has since become a non-profit organisation led by a team of six Portsmouth University graduates (Tom Hewett, Louis Capitanchik, Ryan Thicket, Ahsana Choudhury, Ming Wu, and David Ralph).

Tom Hewett, one of Hack Pompey’s organisers, said: “Hack Pompey is a fun event for people to come together to solve emergent problems, or work on ideas that they’ve come up with in an environment full of likeminded, helpful people from the local community — and best of all, it’s completely free!”

Doors open at 10am at the University of Portsmouth’s brand new Future Technology Centre, during which speciality coffee will be being served by Harbour Coffee. After a short opening ceremony the many makers and creators will have eight hours on day one to begin forging their ideas and weaving them into reality. Day one of Hack Pompey finishes at 6pm.

The hacking fun starts again Sunday morning at 10am, giving teams another 6 hours to continue exploring or polish up their ideas and creations. Closing ceremony at 4:30pm.

During the event there’ll be free breakfast and lunch served each day, with hot and cold beverages available at all times to keep everyone fuelled. There will be a team of volunteers on hand to help bridge any gaps of knowledge throughout.

This Year’s Themes

The Hack Pompey team have set five themes to get your brains ticking: Space, Game Jam, Social Good, Wearable Tech, and Smart Cities.

Do I need to form a team?

Hack Pompey believe that people have the most fun and build the best things when they work together, so highly encourage attendees to bring friends along to make a team. If you don't have a team, don't worry! There will be plenty of opportunity to form a team at the event.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your tools and equipment. Laptops, craft supplies, pen & paper, Raspberry Pis. Whatever you need for your hacking/making!
